Peri-implant Diseases
Like teeth, dental implants can develop problems with the bone surrounding them,
leading to peri-implant disease. Regular checkups and cleaning of the implants every 6-
12 months is recommended.
Peri-implant mucositis
Peri-implant mucositis is the corresponding peri-implant disease of gingivitis. The
implant bleeds on brushing and examination without loss of supporting bone around it.
This disease is completely reversible with a thorough cleaning of the implant by the
dentist.
Peri-implantitis
Peri-implantitis is the most advanced peri-implant disease that can even lead to the loss
of an implant. Implants rarely exhibit mobility like teeth, even if they have lost a
significant percentage of their bone support. The signs and symptoms of peri-implantitis
are bleeding on brushing and clinical examination, the presence of a pocket around the
implant, the presence of purulent discharge and radiographically demonstrated loss of
supporting bone around the implant. Objective findings or even an abscess. often
appear in the area of the implant.
The treatment of peri-implantitis is surgical and when
this disease is diagnosed implant removal may be an option.
